 Remembering 1975

These were the events that we saw as well as some notable people we said farewell to in ‘75

  • On January 1st, A jury convicted Nixon aides H.R. Haldeman, John Mitchell, John Ehrlichman, & Robert C. Maridan of Watergate cover-up charges.

  • The American Bicentennial observance officially gets under way.

  • South Vietnam surrenders to Viet Cong & Communist forces.

  • The U.S. & The U.S.S.R. begin talks to limit strategic nuclear arms.

  • The U.S. & Soviet spacecraft link up in space.

  • Jimmy Hoffa disappears.

  • The Pittsburgh Steelers and the Dallas Cowboys won their respective conference titles and met in the Super Bowl in January of 1976. The Steelers won a thriller 21-14.

  • President Ford escapes an assassination attempt by Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme, a follower of convicted murderer Charles Manson.

  • Archie Griffin won the Heisman Trophy for the second time, the only time a player has won the award twice.

  • Oklahoma won the college football National Championship after defeating Michigan 14-6 in the Orange Bowl.

  • Patty Hearst is arrested 19 months after being kidnapped by the SLA.

  • The Cincinnati Reds defeat the Boston Red Sox to win the World Series.

  • President Ford escaped a second attempt on his life, this time by Sara Jane Moore.

  • Donald Rumsfeld is confirmed by the Senate as Secretary of Defense.

  • U.S. Postal rates increase from 10 cents to 13 cents for a first class letter.
