Jim Bishop Tight End
Marshall County native Jim Bishop started out at Boaz High School, went from there to Little All-American status at Tennessee Tech, and after stops in San Diego, Kansas City, & Houston in the NFL, wound up as one of the integral cogs in the Ams & Vulcans high powered offense. #84 was a powerful blocker and a sure handed receiver. He also could think fast, grabbing a pass against Memphis while falling down, and as he was not touched, he jumped up and continued running until the Southmen defenders had to gang tackle him. He alertly recovered a fumble against Hawaii and carried it in for a TD. Bishop was a big target who knew what to do with the ball once he caught it. Against Memphis in 1975, he caught a short Matthew Reed pass and then proceeded to race towards the goal line until a speedy defensive back finally tripped him up just shy of paydirt. Bishop was also one of the folks on the offensive line who turned in yeoman-like efforts each game clearing the way for the stable of running backs like Art Cantrelle, Paul Robinson, Johnny Musso, Joe Profit, Jimmy Edwards, Charley Harraway, et. al. Bishop is now one of the most recognizable names in North Alabama. His name adorns many, many cars & trucks from his Quad-Cities automotive dealerships.
