Birmingham Vulcans Saturday September 13th,1975 Attendance 12,500Legion Field Birmingham
Nagged by early season injuries, Matthew Reed regained his old form and led the Vulcans by a determined group from San Antonio 33-24. Reed threw two TD passes and ran another to bring the Vulcans back, after trailing early. Ron Slovensky added three field goals in the winning effort. The Wings opened the scoring with the only points of the first quarter, Billy Sadler crashing in from one yard out. The action point was no good and the Wings held the early advantage 7-0 with 9:31 left in the first quarter. This concluded a 10 play, 82 yard drive. After a Vulcan punt, San Antonio began another march. They made it as far as the Birmingham 35 before William Bryant intercepted Wings QB Johnnie Walton at the 12. In the second quarter Birmingham was headed towards the Wings end zone, but fumbled, San Antonio returned the favor at the Birmingham 28. Reed then took the Vulcans the distance in only one play. He threw a bomb that receiver Robert Evans caught behind the secondary and no one would catch him. 72 yards. Jim Bishop grabbed Reed’s pass for the AP and the Vulcans led 8-7 with 8:47 until halftime. After a short Wings punt, Birmingham drove to the six where the drive stalled. Slovensky converted a 23-yard field goal with 2:51 until halftime. Not a lot of time left, but quite a bit remained until intermission. Birmingham’s Art Cantrelle fumbled and the Wings John Ricca recovered at the Vulcans 21. The Wings Dicky James ran it in on the first play. The AP was no good, and with 1:28 to play the Wings led 14-11. Reed set up operations from his own 37. He threw to Cantrelle, who raced out of bounds at the Wings 46. Then Reed threw to Nate Fergerson who took it away from a Wings defender in a duel for the ball then proceeded to run into the end zone. Reed then threw to Cantrelle, who made a twisting one-handed catch for the abll after it had been deflected, for the AP and with 1:13 left until intermission, the Vulcans led again 19-14. The third quarter saw the to teams going at each other back and forth, but only San Antonio managed a field goal with 49 seconds left. As the fourth quarter got under way, Birmingham was in the midst of a 57 yard drive to more points. On the drive’s seventh play, with the Vulcans at the Wings 32, Reed dropped back to pass but was flushed from the pocket. He ran around right end, then reversed his field, completely crossing the field to the left sideline and all the way into the end zone. The Reed to Evans connection worked for the AP and the Vulcans lead was now 27-17. The Vulcans kicked off and San Antonio fumbled, with Bill Rudder recovering at the 32. The Vulcans couldn’t cash it in for seven, but Slovensky kicked a 33-yard field goal to extend the lead to 30-17. San Antonio then drove 64 yards in nine plays for another score, Walton hit a TD pass from six yards out to TE Luther Palmer. The AP was stopped, and the Vulcan’s lead was now down to six. Reed then conducted a clock-chewing drive from his 29 to the Wings 13. The drive stalled and Slovensky kicked his third field goal from 32 yards, giving the home team a 33-24 margin with 1:33 to play. San Antonio had one play left. Gerard Williams picked off Walton on first down and that ended it. Reed had a great game hitting 8 of 19 for 219 yards, two TDs and no interceptions. He also contributed 83 yards rushing. Cantrell added 74 yards, and Ted Powell had 62. In addition to Bryant’s and Williams’ interceptions, Bob Tatarek, Jessie Wolf, Warren Capone, Steve Manstedt and Jim Teal contributed strongly for the defense.
