Birmingham Vulcans Saturday, September 7th, 1975 Attendance 6,342 Civic StadiumPortland
The Birmingham Vulcans put together a complete game in defeating the Portland Thunder 26-8. The Birmingham offense rolled up 306 yards, 239 coming via the ground attack, while the Vulcans defense limited the Thunder to only 173 yards of total offense, 71 of it rushing.
Art Cantrelle was the hero of the game rushing for 79 yards on 20 carries, but three of those carries resulted in scores. He ran for scores of 10 yards, 5 yards, & one yard, and caught a Matthew Reed pass for an action point. Art Allen caught the other AP and Ron Slovensky converted a 39-yard field goal.
Portland’s only point came when Joe Wylie returned a punt 75 yards for a third quarter score.
Johnny Musso gained 49 yards on 10 carries, but sat out the second half to rest a sore knee, Bill Rudder chipped on 46 yards, while Reed had 42 yards and Joe Profit added 23 yards. Reed was 6 of 14 passing for 87 yards, but the big QB wasn’t called on to put the ball in the air very much with the rushing game working so well.
Defensively Larry Willingham and Steve Manstedt had interceptions, and the defensive line of Jessie Wolf, Bob Tatarek, and Harry Gooden pressured Thunder QB Don Horn all night, sacking him three times.
