Birmingham Vulcans  vs Hawaii

Saturday October 4th, 1975

Attendance 18,994

Aloha Stadium

Honolulu

The Birmingham Vulcans took care of business in Hawaii, enjoying the sun & sights, and then defeated the Hawaiians in a business-like fashion 29-16. Birmingham’s offensive line gave Vulcan running backs Art Cantrelle and Johnny Musso big holes and room to run as the tandem combined for 163 yards rushing. John Matlock, Bob Wolfe, Ed Foster, Tom Alward, Al Jenkins, Mark Doak, Jim Bishop, & Ted Powell received accolades from both running backs, as well as from the coaching staff for their yeoman-like work. Defensively, the Vulcans bent in the first half, but responded with a stout second half, shutting the Hawaiians out.

The home team took the early lead when Birmingham’s Rusty Jackson had his punt blocked out of the end zone to give Hawaii a 2-0 advantage.

Later in the first quarter Warren Capone picked off a pass batted into the air and returned it to the Hawaii 19. Five running plays later QB Matthew Reed snuck in from the one. Reed then passed to Robert Evans for the action point, 8-2 Vulcans.

On the first play of the second quarter the Hawaiians re-took the lead on a six-yard scoring run by Clayton Heath, finishing off a 15-play, 62-yard drive. The AP failed, Hawaii led 9-8.

Ron Slovensky missed on a 25-yard field goal attempt, breaking his string of 11 straight conversions. Hawaii took possession and drove 80 yards in 11 plays to score, with QB Rick Cassata finding Tim Delaney in the end zone from five yards out. Birmingham foiled the AP attempt again, but went into the locker room at halftime trailing 16-8.

The Vulcans opened the second half by scoring on their first possession. Reed drove the offense 55 yards in 11 plays. Passes to Dennis Homan & Jim Bishop were the keys, but it took a 4th & 1 dive by Cantrelle to punch it in. The AP was no good, but Birmingham had trimmed Hawaii’s lead to16-15.

Early in the 4th quarter, Reed connected with Powell for a big 18 yarder on third down, Powell making a super catch to bring the ball down, then Cantrelle hammered in from five yards out. Again the AP failed, but the Vulcans had the lead 22-16.

The Birmingham defense flexed its muscles in holding Hawaii on fourth and inches at the Hawaii 43. Reed then led an all running drive with Musso sprinting 18 yards to the one, then finishing off the final yard for the TD. The AP was no good and with 4:23 left to play, Birmingham had its final margin of victory, 29-16.

The defense was led by Capone with 14 tackles and an interception. Jimmy McKinney had 2 interceptions, and LB Jim Teal also contributed a timely interception. Harry Gooden, Jesse Wolf, Bob Tatarek, and Larry Estes were rock-solid in their line play.

Homan caught four passes, to go with Bishop and Powell’s clutch receiving.
