Welcome to the Americans/Vulcans site. As you can see we still have a way to go, but at laast you can see where we're going. Many thanks to Steve Turner for all his hard work on the site, as it would have been impossible to put this all together without him. Keep checking back often as we'll be adding stuff regularly as we only have about 1/3 of the site loaded. Thanks, Greg Allred

Congratulations on a terrific site. I know it is still in progress but these pictures and accounts are great. It's good to know there are other people who miss the renegade leagues. I especially enjoyed the picture of the team I used to follow (Southern California Sun) with thos wonderfully garish uniforms. I have been collecting memorabilia from the WFL, USFL and even the XFL and my apartment is littered with the stuff but it makes me happy so oh well.. I too very much enjoyed the NFL Films WFL episode. Long live the action point, dickerod and orange ball! I have always been an Oakland Raider fan butI was disappointed when the league folded. I can remember having a Sports Illustrated computer card football game with the 26 NFL teams at the time. I created new cards for the Ams, Southmen and Sun. I created a monster as they dominated the NFL teams. If you ever get a chance to read it, there is an interesting book on the WFL (more specifically the New York/Charlotte Stars) called "While the Gettin's Good" by Herb Gluck which chronicles the rise and fall of the league from that franchise's point of view. I was hoping Birmingham and Memphis would go to the NFL but, of course, the NFL wouldn't have it unless they had big bankrolls. Thanks again for the site and I will be checking back with excitement to see how it progresses. Best regards, Brian Eversole

This site is great. I am 28 so I was young when all of this was going on, but it's nice to be able to see some of Birmingham's history. Adam Slovensky

Monday July 5, 2004 Ladies & Gentlemen: The two years I spent in the WFL were the most exciting and enjoyable of my life. I would not trade those experiences and friendships made for anything. My training at Auburn (1970-73) under then SID, Buddy Davidson, and my on-the-job training with the Bham Americans and Vulcans were responsible for me ultimately going to Dallas to work with the Cowboys. The wonderful memories of training camp at Marion Institute still linger with me 30 years later. Alf Van Hoose, Jimmy Bryan, Bill Lumpkin and many others were so much a part of this whole experience. To those who were a part of the Birmingham organization with either the Americans or Vulcans, let me simply say thank you and it was a BLAST! Mike Merrill Former PR/Publicity Director Birmingham Americans Birmingham Vulcans PS Special thanks to Trainer Drew Ferguson and Asst. PR Director Gil Lebreton for making it a time to remember!

I did go to the USFL team the Stalions when I was young, but I would like to thank you guys for this sites it makes me think of my dad since he has past away. This is a good memory to remember my dad and how he loved football.

As a native Miamian, I know much of the exploits of the man named George Mira as the QB for the Univ. of Miami. Never had the pleasure to see him play pro ball in person but watched him when ever I could on TV. My first football game of anykind was the Miami-LSU game. At 12 years of age, I was taken by my next door neighbor an avid Tigers fan who told me of the "butt whoppin" that LSU was to give UM. If my memory serves me correctly it didn't happen quite the way he would have liked it. George brought Miami back to deep into LSU territory with heroic pass plays but Miami lost in the last seconds of the game due to a dropped pass in the end zone. George Mira was my boyhood hero and I was hooked on Hurricane football ever since. My youngest son and I had the pleasure to meet George Mira and George Jr. in the Orange Bowl for the Washington game a couple of years back. I dropped my son off in front of the O.B. to see about buying some tickets. When I arrived I met my son and he told me he bought some tickets from a former UM player. As we sat in our seats my son leaned over and mentions to me that these are the people he bought the tickets from beside him. I looked at the gentelman and said do you know who that is? "No" was his reply. I pointed to the "Ring of Honor" in side the famed walls of the Orange Bowl to the #10 and the name "George Mira". George, I know the fans of the "Birmingham Americans" feel the same way about you that I do. Good luck to all the former players and coaches this weekend. Hope I get to see you. Glad this web site gives you all some of the praise and glory you all so richly deserve. Great web site! Van Carrin Huntsville, Al.

Your site is very informative, I was not around during the Americans and Vulcans tenure here in Birmingham but I am a big proponent of Professional football in Birmingham. Thanks to all the former players who contributed so much to the tradition of pride and winning in the Magic City. Hopefully we will be able to bring Pro Football back to Birmingham. I was sixteen when the league started playing. Going to that first game against the Southern Califirnia Sun started me on the Birmingham Pro Football rollercoaster ride that so many of us have been on for the past 30 years. I have supported every one of the pro teams we have had here. The WFL was a very good league, the games were very exciting. I have some very fond memories of those games. That first game, the rivalry with Memphis. Sitting in the rain on the night Chicago died. The one and only World Bowl. Thanks to The players & coaches. John Wells

Greg, just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed the weekend with teammates and friends. It couldn't have been better and I know you had much to do with all the arrangements. I was totally shocked, to say the least, when Mike Eady presented me with my blue Americans game jersey! What a selfless act on his part! He'll never know what that will mean to me and my two grandsons! The only problem is that I'll probably have to cut it down the middle to give a half to each! Maybe one day I will be fortunate enough to find my white home jersey from a person like Mike so that each grandson will have one! Again, I want to personally thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the effort you put forth in making this past weekend one to remember for both players and fans! It's an honor for me to call you my friend......... DENNIS HOMAN-- Wideout for the Birmingham Americans and Birmingham Vulcans

Welcome to WFL1974.com. As you can see we're still in the building process, there is still quite a bit left to load, but we are making progress. Check out the reunion page and the pictures. Click on the arrow on the right to scroll through the thumbnails of the reunion pictures. Many, many thanks to Webmaster Steve Turner for his work. Thanks to Tony Walls, Mark Walls, Joe DeLeonard, Gene Crowley, for their help with the reunion. A BIG thank you goes out to Brian Clark with Nestle for all of the help with the reunion...I have been asked about further reunions, and all I can say now is that we'll look at for perhaps a 35th year reunion and so on...This was such a special weekend for us I'd hate for it to be the only one. So enjoy teh site and keep checking for further updates. Greg

I still have my penant AND ticket stub from July 10th 74 game against SC SUn. I remember it was a hurricane coming up in the gulf and my mom didn't want my dad to take us but we were there! I was 9 and it was great. Well I think I really thought the Crimson Tide was playing but a nine year old doesn't care.......lol
