The Birmingham Americans did something they had never done before against the Shreveport Steamer. They lost terribly. They were never in the game and were completely dominated in every phase in a humbling 31-0 loss. Shreveport rolled up 29 first downs compared to Birmingham's 8. Shreveport amassed 326 yards rushing to 38 for the Ams. The passing yards were bad too, 203 to 111 in Shreveport's favor. The only statistic in which Birmingham had the bigger numbers were in the punt and penalty yards. The final tally of total offense was 529 for Shreveport and 149 for Birmingham. Steamer running backs Jim Nance and Paul Gipson both surpasses 100 yards rushing in the game, with Nance passing the 1000 yards mark during the game. And this was against a team that Birmingham had plastered 42-14 a month earlier.

After Earl Sark missed on an early field goal opportunity in the first quarter and Shreveport missed one on the ensuing drive. However the Steamer got on the board in the second quarter, aided by two pass interference penalties for 13 and 37 yards, Jim Nance ran it in from eight yards. The action point was no good, 7-0 Steamer.

Shreveport then drove into Ams territory deep enough for Charlie Durkee to hit a 44 yard field goal with 3:37 remaining in the first half. Neither team threatened again and that's the way the first half ended, 10-0 Steamer.

Shreveport scored on their second possession of the third quarter, the result of a 77-yard, six-play drive. Gipson scored from the one, the AP was no good, and it was 17-0. With 8:13 remaining in the third period it looked pretty bad. It would get worse.

Late in the third quarter, Shreveport began a drive that carried over into the fourth quarter, covering 89 yards in 15 plays. Steamer QB David Mayes hit Doug Winslow from 15 yards for the score. The AP was again no good, Shreveport now led by 24.

The home team put together a 70 yard drive in nine plays, with Winslow scoring on a reverse from 13 yards. The AP was no good, and the 31-0 score would hold until the end.

Paul Robinson, Alfred Jenkins, Dennis Homan, Art Cantrelle, & Charley Harraway all contributed pass receptions, and Harraway & Robinson had 17 & 10 yards rushing respectively. Reed & Mira were a combined 12 of 32 for 111 yards and 3 interceptions.
