Birmingham Americans vs Florida Blazers

Wednesday, October 30th 1974

Attendance 21,872

Legion Field

Birmingham

Birmingham broke a two game losing skid by dominating the Florida Blazers for almost the entire game. It was the night before Halloween, but the Americans needed no costumes or trickery. They simply plowed right through the Blazers. After giving up an early touchdown on the Blazers’ first possession, The Americans defense played shutout defense for the majority of the game, while the offense was patient all evening, and explosive when it needed to be. The 26-18 score was not indicative of the domination of the Ams. The Blazers took the opening kickoff and scored in 12 plays, covering 68 yards in the process. Greg Latta provided the big play of the series, a 31-yard reception from Bob Davis. Tommy Reamon scored from two yards out to give the visitors the early advantage, 7-0. The action point was no good. The Ams countered with a 72-yard drive at the end of the first quarter, with QB George Mira finding Paul Robinson out of the backfield for a 15-yard score in the opening moments of the second period. The AP was no good, score tied at seven each. Later in the second period, the Ams gave the hometown fans something to see. Matthew Reed took the offense 99 yards in four plays, with the final 80 covered by a pass to Alfred Jenkins who had sprinted past the Blazer secondary. The combination worked so well that Reed tried it again, hitting Jenkins for the AP. Ams were up 15-7, which is how things stood at intermission.

The Ams didn’t let off the throttle in opening the second half. Reed engineered a nine-play, 52-yard drive for another score. Jenkins and Dennis Homan had big catches to get the offense close, then Art Cantrelle powered in from two yards on fourth down. The Reed to Jenkins combo worked again for the AP, Ams lead was now 23-7.

Birmingham threatened to make the score even worse when Warren Capone recovered a Hubie Bryant fumbled punt at the Blazer 33. However, Blazer defensive lineman John Ricca batted a Reed pass into the air, intercepted it at the 18, and ran it all the way back to Birmingham’s seven before Reed ran him down. Reamon scored and then ran in the AP to draw the Blazers to a 23-15 margin. Florida kicked off and Reed fumbled on the first play and Florida’s Louis Ross recovered. The Ams defense stiffened and the Blazers settled for a 36-yard field goal, to bring things to 23-18.  Florida held and forced an American punt, but Willie Smith intercepted Davis and returned the ball all the way to the Florida five yard line. The offense wasn’t able to punch it in, but Grant Guthrie kicked a 22-yard field goal to provide the final score of 26-18. Smith, who had two interceptions and had a good night returing kicks, was awarded the game ball. Defensively Ross Brupbacher, Warren Capone, Randy Lee, and Gerard Williams had big games defensively as well. The Ams rushing attack was led by Cantrelle, with 62 yards, along with Charley Harraway, Reed, ans Joe Profit. Jenkins, Cantrelle, and Homan had key receptions along with Robinson. Reed hit 6 of 10 passing while in relief of Mira, who hit 5 of 8 before leaving the game with a shoulder injury.
